ABOUT

Hello!

My name is Theresa; founder and lead therapist for the muscle and movement company

I have always been interested in exercise, massage, rehab and therapy, for as long as I can remember. I myself was born with congenital hip dislocation and was never given proper rehabilitation to deal with the problem, which, over time, created other imbalances and issues. I am however one of the few in our family who did not undergo surgery and was lucky to manage my pathology with massage and strength regaining exercises, it does remind me from time to time to keep doing my exercises and therapy, but otherwise I am doing great. I know I nag people to get stronger and make improvements, but I really cannot stand by and watch people put up with struggles when they don’t have to. There is nothing that pleases me more than to watch people on their road to recovery, I thrive off it.

My initial qualifying course in holistic massage was with Simonetta Logan from the School of Holistic Therapy. Simonetta is an amazing teacher and a wonderful friend who guided me down the path I took that led me to where I am.

I then continued my studies and CPD with Jing Advanced Massage Training in Brighton. I was very lucky to have the teachings from Meghan Mari and Rachel Fairweather as I gained my Advanced Clinical Massage certificate and onwards as qualified with a degree level (BTEC6) and carried out research that was published in June 2013.

As part of my CPD (and because I just cant get enough) I continued to learn about rehabilitation, anatomy of injury, athletic testing, performance testing, strength ratios and much more from Dr Bettina Karsten a physiologist who works at Lunex International University in Luxembourg. She is incredibly passionate about her subject and continues to pour her energy into research. She has put on courses for the climbers at my request in Edinburgh and is a wonderful friend and fountain of knowledge.

Furthermore, I thought it would be wise to understand different approaches to training and so I obtained a diploma in Personal Training, also to make the homework I give to each person that bit more interesting or as fun as I can, at least.

I also studied under John Gibbons, the author of “Vital Glutes” and many other books that no therapist should be without. I gained my diploma in what he calls "Body Master" which uses METs, exercise, dysfunction recognition and realignment.  John is an osteopath based in Oxford who works closely with the Oxford rowing team and is a guru in his subject. Another fountain of knowledge to regain balance and help reduce pain.

I have then gone on to study Functional Patterns with Naudi Aguilar, which mirrors a lot of my work with imbalances and realignment, but he takes it down step by step to really make the kinetic chains in our bodies fire in the correct order.  I am personally using many of the techniques and they are really helping my own awareness and movement.  I guess I spend so much time everyday leaning over the top of people when I am massaging and demonstrating strengthening exercises that I also can feel imbalances creeping in.  I too need to keep on top of my own posture and movement.

I get asked from time to time to do legal work as an expert witness when injury has occurred in certain settings and I also do lectures and presentations on injury prevention and rehabilitation as well as assessment on workplaces likely to cause chronic injury due to the nature of the repetitive actions and advising the remediation of said workplace and those effected by inefficient work practices.

When I am not at work, I am busy with my family.  My husband and my son (and the dog too) are all very active, so there is never a dull moment in my life.  My husband was a climbing instructor before working in rope access and my son is active in sports and drumming.  They all keep me very busy aswell as my own interests in skiing, dancing, hillwalking and more recently spinning my excess husky fur!

I will always continue to learn, to attend courses, seminars and conferences, its what I do, its what I love. I then share my knowledge and skills with my clients which has built the Muscle and Movement company into what it is today.
